Volunteer Opportunities:

Urban Agriculture Team (5 positions)

Members maintain a 2+-acre urban community farm and farmers market area. Grow, harvest and distribute produce to market; Monitor health and safety of livestock; Assist with cleaning chicken coop twice per week; Promote principles of gardening, composting, seed starting, and nutrition to community members. Increase community awareness of Hattie Carthan community garden by assisting with planning festivals, workshops and special seasonal events.

Urban Agriculture Fundraising Support Interns (2 positions)

20 hours per week

Job Description: The Hattie Carthan community garden/market is seeking two candidates for these positions. Hirees will work with project director to identify grant sources, create a fundraising database, coordinate grant calendar, write grants and conduct fundraising activities which benefit the garden and market. Position requires strong networking skills, the ability to achieve milestones within strict timelines, and effective oral and written communication skills. Successful candidates will assist with setting up new urban agriculture programs, writing grants to support the garden and market projects, conducting research on food project initiatives and streamlining operations in the farm and market. Experience fundraising and facilitating agricultural projects with diverse audiences in an urban setting preferred. Knowledge of low income food programs preferred.

Food Education Mentors (2 positions)

The Hattie Carthan community garden/market seeks two volunteer interns to help support and encourage the development and growth of childrens urban agriculture. The food education mentors provide an avenue for chefs and growers to engage in the community and to support food sustainability. Most importantly, the food education mentors should implement techniques and programs which inspire children to grow their own food, even in the city. Food education mentors do neighborhood outreach and cooking demonstrations in the market, childhood centers and schools. Food education mentors teach kids to grow and cook their own food.

School Garden Project Assistant

The Hattie Carthan community garden is seeking a School Garden Project Assistant to deliver garden based lessons to school children. The School Gardens Project Assistant will provide support in the following:

o Facilitating partnerships between the garden/market and neighborhood Schools.

o Acting as Liaison between school principals, teachers and administrators and Project manager

o Arranging school trips to market and garden during farming season

Responsibilities:

1. project planning and implementation

2. curriculum research

We are especially seeking candidates with the following skills and experience:

o Gardening (including, planning and designing)

o Youth work (particularly with low-income urban youth of color)

o Strong organizational skills, ability to set and keep deadlines, attention to detail

o Demonstrated interest in and commitment to environmental and social justice

o Curriculum development or teaching experience

o Light to medium construction skills

o Volunteer recruitment and management experience

o Comfort with MSOffice (Word, Excel,

Outlook, etc.)

Assistant Market Coordinator Position

Duties:

To address the lack of access to affordable, fresh produce in low-income neighborhoods, the assistant market coordinator will assist the market operations coordinator in the overall functioning of the market.

Assist Market operations coordinator with EBT sales and accounting for the farmers market, generate outreach materials for market, evaluate farmers/vendors and measure customer satisfaction.

Assist market operations coordinator with lockbox security

Assist with Distribution of flyers at events and local community centers

Assist with writing brochures for the market and updating the garden & market website.

Conduct farmer/vendor evaluation and track market complaints

Interview market goers monthly to ensure satisfaction with products.

Submit monthly customer satisfaction forms to Market Project director

Act as liaison with partner organizations (calling farmers, partner orgs, write letters)

Work with market operations coordinator to ensure adequate assortment of fruits and vegetables are in the market weekly

Organize youth interns to harvest food for market on Fridays

Assist with training of volunteers and youth interns;

Coordinate customer mailing lists and market volunteer lists

Place garden event ads and market event ads in all community newspapers and free advertising sources between Clinton Hill and Bushwick
